Working out in the morning or the evening: What is better?

By: Adelle Collins/BRN Fitness

In an attempt to end the debate, I have put together a list of advantages for both times of the day. The choice is up to you…

Working out in the morning:

  1. Gyms are less crowded: Not many people can commit to getting to the gym right before they head off to work, which is understandable. But if you can you will be rewarded with a gym almost all to yourself!
  2. Easier to stay consistent: Consistency is key! Getting your workout done first thing in the morning is one way to be sure that you won’t skip it later due to other unexpected outings or just from being worn out.
  3. Starts your day off right: Getting a good workout in early in the day is the best way to boost those mood elevating endorphins that help to lift your spirits through out the day.
  4. Can aid in better sleep: In a 2011 study at Appalachian State University, researchers discovered that getting your workout in early helps you to have a better sleep due to a reduction in blood pressure at night.

Working out in the evening:

  1. More strength: You get to sleep in a little bit longer so your body is more prepared.  Also your joints and muscles are more flexible in the evening, because they have already been warmed up from your day.
  2. Easier to find a gym buddy: Just like you have obligations and work to tend to, so do your friends. This means working out later when everyone is freed up from their day offers you more gym buddy options.
  3. More time to workout: With your workday and all other obligations out of the way, you can spend more time exercising and less time worrying about where you need to be next.
  4. It is a great way to blow off steam from your day: Working out in the evening is a great way to take away your stress and clear your mind from the long day you have had.

The thing is, as long as you are setting aside a time that is comfortable for you and your routine you are already one step in the right direction. Find a routine that works best for you and allows you to be consistent.
